About Libyan Desert Glass

Libyan Desert Glass, also known as Libyan Gold Tektite or Great Sand Sea Glass, is a rare natural glass found in the remote desert region of western Egypt, close to the Libyan border.

It is believed to have formed approximately 29 million years ago as the result of an extremely high-energy cosmic impact event. The tremendous heat generated during the event melted silica-rich desert material, which later cooled and solidified into the beautiful natural glass we know today as Libyan Desert Glass.

Its colors range from pale champagne and honey yellow to rich golden tones, and individual pieces may be transparent, translucent, or contain natural inclusions and textures.

Libyan Desert Glass is especially fascinating because it is found only within a relatively small area of the Sahara Desert. For thousands of years, it has attracted attention for its unusual appearance and mysterious origin. One of the most famous historical examples of Libyan Desert Glass was found in jewelry associated with the tomb of the Egyptian pharaoh Tutankhamun.
